Language Arbitrage: Profiting from Underrepresented Languages

How Nimble Solopreneurs Can Unlock the Potential of Uncharted Linguistic Territories

The idea for this article is all thanks to Taylor Swift, well her merch that is. I wanted to buy some merch from her famous Era’s tour, especially that newly released hoodie. I had enough money to buy it online, and I was ready to place my order.

But every website State-side that sold legit Taylor Swift Era’s merch kept showing “Sorry, this item is out of stock”! I really wanted that hoodie. I decided to try one last thing: I searched for some international and foreign language ecomm sites that might have the hoodie in stock. Armed with Google Translate I could totally navigate the different languages sites.

Yet I couldn’t find anything. I was about to give up, when I came across a site in Japanese. It had a lot of Taylor Swift merch for sale and the best part?! They still had stock of the hoodie I wanted, and in my size, for a very reasonable price to boot!

This little shopping adventure kept tickling my brain. There is something amazing here but what? It hit me mid-run (exercise is good for idea generation apparently *haha*) If that Japanese store had an English translated website, a horde of Swifty locusts would have descended and vacuumed up ALL their stock before I even had a change. There it is. The gold.

You must have guessed what the hidden gold mine for nimble solopreneurs is by this point? It is the big difference between the representation of certain languages on the internet and their real-world usage.

In this article:

Some languages are overrepresented online, while others are seriously underrepresented or even absent. This yawning gap presents a tremendous opportunity for enterprising solopreneurs to seize and capitalise on, especially those with flexible thinking.

Imagine unlocking the potential of languages that are in high demand among real-life users but are not adequately catered to in the digital realm. This is the meaning of arbitrage — where you acquire something at a relatively low cost in one country and sell it for a profit in another.

“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head.

If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”

— Nelson Mandela

Finding that Era’s Tour hoodie was a win-win scenario for that business in Japan and me. Now how can that apply to you and your business? Imagine doubling or tripling your audience exposure by just translating and making your products, services or articles available in a language other than English!
