Unlocking the Power of Human Touch in the Digital World

Welcome to another power-packed article where we’ll dive deep into the world of solopreneurship and uncover the secrets to finding a profitable topic. As solopreneurs, we know that choosing the right topic is like finding the golden ticket to success. It’s the driving force behind creating impactful self-development publications that resonate with your audience.Ā

ASSESSING YOUR PASSIONS AND SKILLS:
This is where it all starts – finding a killer topic.

A.) You’ve got to tap into what makes you tick.Ā
What are your passions? What lights a fire in your belly? Dig deep and identify those areas that make you jump out of bed in the morning. Are you a master at your trade, a wiz at organising, or possess a super skill? Discover your unique strengths and expertise, because let me tell you, when you align your passion with your skill set.

B.) Marry what YOU WANT and what the MARKET WANTS.
The magic happens when what-you-want blends with what-the-market-wants. Study your target audience, their pain points, and the gaps in the solopreneur space.Ā

  • What are people hungry for?Ā
  • What problems are they desperately seeking solutions for?Ā

Find that sweet spot where your passion meets the needs of the market, and you’ll have a recipe for success to increase eyeballs on your work.

CONDUCTING MARKET RESEARCH:
Let’s get down to the nitty gritty business of carving out success as a solopreneur. Solopreneurship is a battlefield, so we’ve got to shift our mindset. Think Call of Duty. You’re reading this because at the back of your mind, you want to dominate the solopreneur space you’ve picked out for yourself.Ā

RECONNAISSANCE

This project is for naught without a reconnaissance mission.
Stargate (1994)

The first step in any war is reconnaissance. You need to know what’s already out there. But how to get a feel of the lay of the land you want to conquer? A few places to start would be:

  • Dive into the sea of self-development publications,Ā
  • Listen to podcasts that focus on your niche,Ā
  • Sign up on platforms to see what’s trendingĀ
  • Note what’s overplayed on these platforms
  • Start following large accounts in your niche
  • Make note of what they are selling, who their audience are, how they present their product

These large accounts / brands / personalities are your competition. Study your competition like a hawk and identify their strengths and weaknesses and position your brand, your company in a spot that can syphon clients / views that these large accounts are missing out on.Ā

ā€œAs iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.ā€

ENGAGEMENTĀ

ā€œSomething connectedā€¦ā€
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

But don’t stop there! The second step in any war is engagement with the other side. Connect with your audience. Make that first contact but don’t leave it there, try to delve onto a deeper level.

This is where we all have to roll up our sleeves and connect with our audience, that is ENGAGEMENT. There is no chatbot or AI helper that can replace this very human touch. If we want to grow our brand we have to connect with the people who have subscribed to our newsletter / blog / channel / profile. But how does one do this?Ā

Ā ā€œYou can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.ā€

– Dale Carnegie

ENGAGEMENT – A HOW TO TIP LIST:
Engaging with our audience across platforms is a key skill for any solopreneur. It can help you build trust, loyalty, and awareness for your brand, as well as increase your reach and conversions. Here are some tips on how to do it well:

  • Jump into conversations šŸ’¬.
Don’t just broadcast your messages, but also join the discussions that are happening around your brand, industry, or niche. Social listening tools can be helpful or just simply setting aside 15 minutes each day or once a week to monitor relevant keywords, hashtags, or mentions, and respond to comments, questions, or complaints in a timely and friendly manner. I found just leaving helpful, encouraging, or reflective comments on the articles I resonated with generated subscribers for my Medium channel!Ā
  • Set a regular content posting schedule šŸ“….
It’s not easy sticking to this one. But consistency in posting fresh stuff is the only way to reach 1. New eyeballs and 2. Keep existing eyeballs engaged. I’ve started using this simple social media calendar to plan ahead. Not months ahead but just 2 or 3 weeks ahead as I’m new to this habit.
  • Gather feedback to hear from your audience āœļø.
Asking questions, conducting polls, or creating surveys are some ways to invite your audience to share their opinions, preferences, and needs with you. Which is why this poll is here for you dearest readers šŸ˜‚Ā
  • Cross-promote your content across channels šŸ”—.
A good cross-promotion tactic is to include links to your other social media profiles within your captions, descriptions, etc. We have to do all we can to help our audiences find us across social media platforms1. This summer I’ll be cleaning up all my mish-mash social accounts. You don’t want to know the stuff I posted or Pinned during my wild younger days *hahaha* It’s best to do a deep social media cleanse. Who’s going to do this cleanse with me??
  • Develop a brand voice šŸ—£ļø.
Having a consistent and distinctive tone of voice for your brand can help you stand out from the crowd and connect with your audience on an emotional level. Your brand voice should reflect your personality, values, and goals, as well as match the expectations and preferences of your target audience.Ā

FIND YOUR BRAND VOICE

Here’s a great little exercise for you.Ā

  1. Grab a scrap piece of paper and have a look at these guys.Ā
  2. Quickly scan a few of their posts. See if you can identify:
    • what they like to talk about on their channels,Ā
    • their style of speaking,Ā
    • who their audience are, andĀ
    • what channels they use to generate income (products/ sponsorships/ event hosts/ publications, etc)
  1. Exam these brand pages: Tori Dunlap, Gary Vee, Erika Kullberg, Seth Goodwin, Alex Hormozi, Tatiana Londono.
  • Leverage trending topics šŸ“ˆ.
Staying on top of the latest trends, news, and events can help you create timely and relevant content that sparks interest and engagement from your audience. You can use tools like Google Trends, Exploding Topics, Twitter Trends*, Semrush Trends, or BuzzSumo to discover what topics are popular or viral in your niche or location.
  • *To find the hottest trends on Twitter, log into your account and click on the ā€œTrendingā€ tab (under ā€œExploreā€)
  • Make use of social listening šŸ‘‚.
Social listening is the process of monitoring and analysing what people are saying about your brand, industry, or competitors online. It can help you identify opportunities for engagement, such as joining conversations, addressing pain points, providing solutions, or creating user-generated content.

I hope these tips help you create more engaging and effective cross-platform campaigns. If you need some inspiration, check out these examples of successful cross-platform campaigns from different brands:
